November INK STAINS

Dear HB Creativity Alumni and Friends,

A brief update on all the exciting things going on in the literary whirl that surrounds us, including news of launches, upcoming deadlines and new writing workshops:

First of all congratulations to Linda Abbott (The Hull Home Fire, Flanker Press, Canada), and to Kate Robbins (Bound to the Highlander, Tirgearr Publishing, Ireland) who both had highly successful launches in St. John’s for their respective novels, coincidentally on the same day! I’m delighted to say I managed to make both and it’s great to see such marvellously talented and dedicated writers get the success they deserve.

Upcoming Events

The 2013 Newfoundland and Labrador Credit Union Fresh Fish Award for Emerging Writers offers a cash prize of $5,000 and $1,000 in professional editing services for the best unpublished manuscript written by a resident of the province who is not published in book form. Each runner-up receives a cash prize of $1,000. The biennial award is presented by the Writers’ Alliance of Newfoundland and Labrador (WANL) and the Literary Arts Foundation of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The three finalists this year are (in alphabetical order):

Joshua Goudie for his novel, The Art of Dogs

Tracey Waddleton for her short story collection, Send More Tourists, The Last Ones Were Delicious

Paul Whittle for his short story collection, Everything Is What It Is

The 2013 nominees will read from their shortlisted works at Bianca’s, 171 Water Street in St. John’s, on Tuesday, November 5, at 7:00 pm. Take in this great event as experience shows us that Fresh Fish nominees are writers to watch!
The winner will be announced at a Ceremony at Government House hosted by The Honourable Frank F. Fagan, CM, ONL, MBA, Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador and Her Honour Mrs. Patricia Fagan, on Wednesday, November 6.

Upcoming Deadlines

Don’t forget the upcoming deadline for the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador Arts and Letters Awards: November 22. And don’t forget also the Instant Hook Literary Prize: deadline December 2

Writing Workshops

A limited number of spaces will become available in November for the 8 Unit Online Writing Course. Email me for availability. Starting January 2014 I will be offering a novel writing course with a video conferencing component, combining the flexibility and focus of the online course with the buzz of the live course. I will be signing up the first participants in late November.
